A building envelope is the entire system of materials and design that controls the air movement, water-vapor movement and temperature of a structure — generally the exterior shell: walls, roof and floor. For a comfortable, stable indoor climate, the insulation and the moisture-and-air barrier have to work together. When they don't, you get drafts, condensation and high bills no matter how much insulation is stuffed in.

Why foam

Two jobs, one pass

Most assemblies use separate insulation and a separate air barrier — and the air barrier rarely gets sealed perfectly in the field. Spray foam insulates and air-seals at the same time, flashing itself around wire, pipe and duct penetrations. That's why a foamed envelope tends to actually perform the way the drawings intended, instead of leaking at every seam.

Where does the envelope leak the most?

Usually the top (attic/roofline), the bottom (rim joists and crawlspace), and penetrations for wire, pipe and ducts. Those are the spots we target first because they drive the most air movement.
